Banana production in Ecuador is important to the national economy. The country exports more than 4 million tonnes each year.
Bananas are harvested almost every week of the year in the provinces of El Oro, Los Rios, and Guayas.
Baby bananas are distinguished by their size and flavor. The baby banana is also known as the Finger banana, Lady finger banana, Niño banana , Murapo and Orito.
Baby bananas are harvested in Los Rios and Santo Domingo.
Plantains
Plantain bananas or cooking bananas are a staple food in many tropical countries.
Plantains are starchy, low in sugar and are cooked before serving as they are unsuitable raw.
They are used in many savoury dishes somewhat like potatoes, fried or baked.
Before 1961 pineapples were seasonal products in Ecuador but now they are grown year- round. Pineapples are indigenous to South America, from the area between Southern Brazil and Paraguay.
